Chamber Series: Meet Our Members City of Toccoa

The City of Toccoa, Working Hard for Your Interests.

The City of Toccoa has invested in your Toccoa-Stephens County Chamber of Commerce since 1958. We recently sat down with the Planning and Main Street Department to learn more about what the City does for Toccoa-Stephens County.

We interview Connie Tabor, Community Development Director, and Christian Hamilton, Main Street Manager and were overwhelmed with what the City does for our Community. The downtown district is a historical site on the National Register of Historic Places. The district covers 21 linear blocks from Broad Street to Hill Street. When asked what their favorite part about doing business in our community Connie stated, “I love that the downtown district has become an economic engine that feeds the growth of business. Over 1400 employees work in the downtown area. Those employees purchase gifts, lunch, flowers, have consultations with doctors and attorneys, and contribute so much more to the 160 plus downtown businesses.” During our organic conversation about our downtown Christian stated, “the Main Street is the heart and soul of our community. At any time, one can walk down the tree lined street and see families or friends out shopping and dining. The downtown area really gives our community a sense of place.”  The Main Street Department is constantly working to create an inviting atmosphere downtown and families can always find something to do. Christian stated, “We see over 860,000 people downtown every year because of the draw to our businesses and events. If you would like a reminder about upcoming events sent to your phone text MAINSTREET to 474747.”

The City serves on the Airport Authority Board as well as the Stephens County Development Authority Board and heavily supports the Chamber of Commerce. They know the importance of partnering with local agencies to see our community grow and thrive. A couple of the many designations our City has received are Rural Zone Area, Plan First Community, Live-Work-Play Designation, Grand Community Award, and a Tree City Designation because 54% of our downtown is covered by tree canopy.
